Water and Energy for Food (WE4F)

Agriculture in East Africa has a significant social and economic footprint, yet, thefull agricultural potential remains untapped, due tolow productivity and high post-harvest losses. The obstacles often relate to the energy and water sectoras well asclimate change: lack of energy access, inefficient energy use andthe economic and environmental costs of traditional energy sources (e.g. diesel, wood)but also the inefficient use of groundwater, poor water quality and unsustainable water management practices. In order to address these challenges, there are new approaches, technologies and services by innovative businesses for a more climate-friendly, water-and energy-efficient agriculture and food industry. However, these innovators often lack entrepreneurial capacities to successfully and sustainably market technologies in local, regional and global markets. Insufficient alignment with the needs of end users, inadequate business models, lack of financing solutions orstructural issues are other examples of struggles that innovators face.
